In critical situations, information superiority can be essential, saving your life as well as others. One means of achieving this superiority is to use the most advanced data links, i.e. ensure that the communication between aircraft, command centres and other information sources etc. functions optimally.
Saab pioneered the development of tact...
ical data links for combat aircraft. This took place as early as the mid 1950s in connection with the development of Saab's Draken aircraft. Back then, it was mainly about sharing information between the aircraft and command centre.
That was followed by the development of the Viggen combat aircraft, with a data link that allowed information to be shared directly between aircraft, something that was way ahead of its time. It was in fact almost 10 years before the USA and Russia could unveil similar systems. Today, after a further 40 years of development, the possibilities with data links are considerably greater.

ness of the situation.
The data link also allows enemy aircraft to be seen while remaining invisible to them. By using target data that is linked automatically from other Gripen aircraft, the pilot is able to act without being visible on the opponent’s radar, with the tactical advantages this entails. The same tactics can be used against targets on land and at sea. Target data from one Gripen aircraft can be relayed to another group of attacking Gripen aircraft that remain invisible on the opponent’s radar.
Based on a superior situational awareness, the Gripen formations step by step maneuver to a tactical advantage.

’s fire control radar experience. It has been designed in close collaboration with Saab and is a vital part of the Gripen next generation multi functional sensor system.
The sensor suite includes active and passive sensors, integrated for central sensor command and sensor fusion. This will significantly increase the multirole capability and sensor performance against future threats and more complex scenarios.
